In this article we are going to take a closer look at some devices for GPS that will be necessary depending on what you will use GPS for. Other devices will extend the quality of using GPS.
If you didn’t already know it, GPS stands for Global Positioning System and is a global navigation satellite system developed by the US Department of Defense. GPS is the only fully functional global navigation satellite system in the world and it can be used freely worldwide. GPS is used more and more by companies and private persons for navigation and tracking purposes.
Below I have described a few GPS devices.
Displays
When you purchase a new TV, you’ll probably go for a large display TV because they are much cooler visually than a small screen. However, when it comes to the display of your gps tracking device things are a little different. The handiness and portability of the device coupled with the fact that most GPS displays installed in cars calls for a small display. The map of a typical display for vehicles gives you the following information:
- Where the next turn is
- The name of street you are turning onto
- Your vehicles current location
- An estimated time of your arrival
The GPS displays come in sizes ranging from 7-inches with connection option to external video devices for big screen variants to the hand held devices that can be as small as 1.5in.X 0.9in.
PC Interface
Most portable GPS models have USB or serial ports for the PC. With this device you can download the latest maps as well as new versions of system software. You can also get Bluetooth GPS that communicates wirelessly with mobile devices.
Maps
Map devices for GPS are integrated in the hard drive in most models. You can have maps that show details up to street level. The map software includes a menu option where you can access the data you need. You can, for example
- input a name and the GPS device will give you the coordinates of the destination on the map or
- input the coordinates and the system will give you the destination.
There are models providing very detailed map information on a specific location but these can be expensive. Other models let you download the latest maps either directly for the internet or via CD-ROM or DVD-ROM discs. You can get models where you have to subscribe to a plan for updating the maps while this is included on other models.
The devices for GPS described above are only a few of many devices you can use together with GPS. As mentioned in the beginning, the devices you will need to work with your GPS will depend on what you are going to use it for.
