Traditional film cameras dominated in the years before the new millennium arrived and when pictures were developed from these cameras, they were usually mounted in traditional picture frames. But when digital photography slowly overshadowed film photography, digital photos often ended up in computers and mobile devices shortly after. Picture frames were still employed to keep real pictures that were printed off from a digital source. Now digital photo frames aim to take away the use of traditional frames in just the same way that film photography got wiped off the map.
So can digital photo frames achieve the manufacturer’s goal? Maybe – and that is mainly because digital photo frames have their own respective pros and cons.
Pros
Save on money and resources
Processing film costs money and consumes resources. Even when the teething problems were solved with digital photography, ink and paper was still being used to produce a picture that would fit in a picture frame. Now with the latest digital photo frames, all of that is eliminated by the use of an LCD panel display for showing digital snapshots in all their true colors. All it takes is a memory card, which should come with your camera anyway, or a cheap USB pen drive.
Versatile in keeping images fresh
It is clear how easy it is to send pictures to the display. Some devices may even allow wireless transfer making it even simpler. But the true value lies on the ease of changing to a different picture just by navigating through the interface. If you would like a new photo displayed, all you need to do is fill up the memory drive or drive with new pictures or send updated ones over. After that, your photo should show up and again, no money spent on printing or buying paper.
Packed with features
Some digital photo frames may not be limited to displaying photos alone. Others may have interesting slideshow features or support for other file types like MP3’s, AVI’s, documents, and other picture file types. The costly ones may even have internet capabilities like RSS feed fetching and displaying of photos from online photo sharing sites.
Cons
Needs power to operate
Like your bigger television display, digital photo frames need power to work and that power may be coming from your electrical socket which may slightly hike up the electric bill or through batteries that you may need to buy every few days for prolonged usage. However, these problems can be a thing of the best as many portable devices are going green and new energy alternatives are being used.
Frames are limited
Certain photos look superb when combined with the right photo frame. Since it is impossible for the LCD panel to detach from the frame, all digital photos will be forced on that frame unless you buy another digital photo frame that sports a different look, which may require some additional spending. This shouldn’t be too worrying though since in the near future, photo frames will become more popular as households are embracing newer forms of technology.
The small amounts of drawbacks are slowly fading away including the cost. Some digital photo frames cost very little more than old fashioned photo frames these days. The great versatility of these photo frames should be enough to buy right away.
