Dirt Devil

Dirt Devil is the world’s most popular small vacuum cleaner. There is one for homes and one for apartments and Rvs. Many people vacuum their cars with it. The brand name also applies to some larger units.

Dirt Devil

In 1905 the company which would later create Dirt Devil began. A vacuum called the Cyclone was first patented by Royal Manufacturing. The Cyclone sold over 25 million units. It was a vacuum with a metal case.

Royal Manufacturing turned to plastic cased vacuums in 1980. They called it the Royal Dirt Devil. Royal gradually dropped from the name. The two word name was better.

A separate Royal line is still sold. These vacuums are more expensive and better built. But that line sells under a different business name. It’s TTI Floor Care North America. That’ Techtronic Industries who also makes the Hoover vacuums. It’s not uncommon for this to be the case in the modern business world. Mergers and acquisitions cause former rivals to be owned by the same parent company. Then those companies continue to operate under various brand names. The separate brands continue to improve. That’s because those products already have established sales. It would be foolish to discard those.

Dirt Devil started out with a catchy slogan. Mention Dirt Devil and people would repeat – nothing escapes the power of a Dirt Devil. In 2005 that slogan was retired in favor of a new slogan Fight Dirty. It’s not as catchy.

In 1984 consumers met the Dirt Devil hand vac. Its agitator brush brought up the dirt hidden deep in carpets. For hard to reach spots it had a hose. It sold over 25 million units, more than any other hand vac had ever sold in the United States. The company pulled in a lot of cash.

An upgrade was introduced in 1996. They called it the Dirt Devil Ultra Hand Vac. The hose now folded up inside the vacuum. This model is still sold at some stores.

It was back to the classic design for Dirt Devil in 2005 . This one had a filter and collected the dirt in a plastic cup. This one didn’t need a bag. Nobody likes to deal with those dirty vacuum cleaner bags.
