A service consultant’s job spans a wide variety of duties. They are the ones who deal with the customers on a daily basis and have to possess both great communication and people skills. As with any professional career there is a lot of training that goes into becoming a service adviser. You will definitely have to complete a NATEF certification program to work in this field. Most community colleges hold classes which help you to integrate yourself into the field. Some employers will request that you obtain your ASE certification, but it is generally not a requirement.
Duties
Once you have gotten all of the certification that you need then you will also need to get a little time under your belt. The requirement of two years at a dealership along with general knowledge of the automotive technology field is a must in order to be successful at this job. There will also be many of specified duties that will have to be carried out.
Extended hours will be one thing that you have to get used to. Most dealerships will require that you come early and stay late each and every day. Being able to deal with such a hectic schedule is crucial to this type of work.
The one thing that has to be put at the top of your list is customer service. Everything else has got to be put on the back burner. There will be daily appointments along with being able to supply all clients with the information that they need about the service that your company provides.
The importance of organization cannot be stressed enough. There will be scheduling to keep track of as well as paperwork to keep track of. You will also be required to follow up on all jobs and services being provided to each customer.
With any job there are going to be instances where a delay cannot be avoided. It could be that a part has not come in or the dealership may be shorthanded on service technicians. Whatever the cause for any type of hold up you are responsible for following up with it. Your responsibility will involve keeping the customer updated with any information that you can provide as well as letting the tech know the status of an incoming part.
Being an automotive service trainer can take a lot of time and dedication to the job. The important thing is that you place both your job and customers first, you learn this after automotive service training. After that you can sit back and reap the rewards of a job well done.
