XOPC is one of those words or names which is constructed of symbols which are present but translate as alternate things in the Western and Cyrillic alphabets. Westerners feel that they recognise all these letters, but they find it impossible to say the word or name.
In Cyrillic, the letter “X” represents something near to our “KH”, for exampleexactly like the western “O”, “P” is one of those false friends. We would like to pronounce it as the “P” in Papa, but in Cyrillic it’s pronounced similar to our letter “R”. Finally, the Cyrillic letter “C” is always pronounced as double “S” in English. So at the end of all that we find that the closest way to phonetically spell XOPC in western letters would be approximately in between “Khorss” and “Horse”
Hors was the ancient East European god of the winter sun. He’s spoken of in the Russian Primary Chronicle and the Tale of Igor’s Campaign. Hors represents the old sun which, in East European mythology, gets smaller and his powers are diminished as the days in the Northern Hemisphere become shorter. Eventually he dies on the night of the winter solstice, finally worn out and overcome, so the story goes by the dark and evil powers of Chernobog.
At dawn on the following day (December 23rd) Hors is resurrected and becomes the god of the new sun, Koleda.
As a result of his resurrection, the legendary East European Peoples worshipped Hors as the god of healing, survival, and the dual triumphs of health over illness and good over evil. He was reputedly a master of herbs, a Shaman or medicine-man and a god of great Wisdom. He’s rather like the legendary Scandinavian god Baldur or the Roman god Asclaepius. There are several comparable gods in lots of other legendary civilisations, and it’s interesting to remark the comparisons between the assets of the god XOPC, and the god-like lion Aslan in the children’s story book “The Lion the Witch & the Wardrobe” by C.S. Lewis.
Lewis was known to be fascinated by the Celtic traditions and his story made reference to many Celtic words and names. Is it possible that he also revealed an equivalent to XOPC in the Celtic tradition?
At the winter solstice, the legendary East European Peoples would celebrate a ritual chain-dance named the horo in honour of the god Hors. Throughout Bulgaria, traditional chain-dances are still called “Хоро”, pronounced “Horo”. In other parts of the East European world this type of dance is called “Хоровод” which we westerners would pronounce as “Khorovod”.
