What is “server virt”?
It’s the new in phrase doing the rounds in the IT services world. ‘Server Virt’ is a syllable-saving way of saying server virtualisation. If you are not fed up with with all the latest jargon, let’s discover what it has to offer!
The Foundations
Servers are expensive. They have to be completely solid (or as close as possible to that), and with the data that is accumulated on them, they are made to last. They are constructed for high performance instead of low cost. A bit like a vault is to a bank, servers for your work are not items you should skimp on (never mind how great your IT support might be). Business managers recognise the truth of this, and so servers are often purchased with a safety first attitude.
Servers also take up space. Not only are they substantial pieces of hardware, they usually need storing in a 19″ rack, alongside supporting equipment
- power supplies
- keyboards
- wiring
and kept at a distance from small particles of dirt, accidental spillages and curious (or malicious) fingers. This usually leads to putting them in a dedicated room or at least a partitioned area in the building.
Servers get through vast amounts of energy. Not simply the electricity required to run a robust computer that’s switched on 24/7, but also the ventilation and cooling they need to keep them working at the correct temperature (a server in a small space can produce excess heat).
All this would be manageable enough if you just needed a single server.
But that’s the problem: more than one server is frequently needed. Whether that’s to fulfill different functions, to act as a safe-guard, or to handle fluctuating demands like peaks in internet visits or lots of people looking through their e-mails in the morning, organisations frequently have a ‘peak server load’ requirement which far exceeds their average use. You can’t physically switch a server on and off in response to this load, so that’s a lot of equipment on standby.
Seeing the quandary? Lots of pricey equipment, using loads of space in your buildings, getting through quantities of energy, and a lot of it ‘just in case’.
Surely there are better solutions! For many different businesses virtualising servers is the way forward.
‘Server Virt’ just means separating and re-organising one physical piece of equipment into several different instances of a server. Every instance can either execute the same tasks, or be allotted to different types of task.
How Does it Work?
It’s simple in theory, although it takes a lot of expertise to implement in a proper, business-proof kind of way. A company like these IT services are usually required. But the advantages of having one piece of equipment perform the tasks of several virtual machines, therefore performing like multiple physical servers, are obvious:
Lower prices (on items that are not needed full-time)
More room at your premises (far less space used by the servers)
Lower utility bills (by huge amounts! … and a greener footprint to match)
