Gifted children require additional help in their studies to ensure they can study at the proper level. Started in 1984, The Summer Institute for the Gifted (aka SIG) is a program planned for children and teenagers to meet their social and academic needs. Several students have taken benefit of it and enjoyed the facilities provided. Children aged just about 9 – 18 years old, who have completed the 4th through 11th Grade are qualified. Three-week inhabited programs happen at a selection of venues including Bryn Mawr College, Amherst College, UCLA, Emory University, UC Berkeley, the Austin campus of the University of Texas, and Vassar College. Princeton University also hosts the Summer Institute for the Gifted for students who have completed 7th to 11th Grade.

It is a well prearranged program offering a variety of studies and the chance to meet people and make new friends. Under the management of the Counselor, Students stay in college dormitories with spaces for 10 – 12 residents. The staff also includes a Residential Assistant and a Housemaster. Lasting 75 minutes each, classes are prepared into five periods. The three subject areas are Liberal Arts, Math and Science. These are separated into topics – biology, chemistry, robotics, and math subjects that include algebra and geometry. When class is over for the day, homework is given to students. But, it is not all class work at the Summer Institute for the Gifted. Each day, students are given an hour of leisure. They can prefer to take part in sports, spend time in one of the laboratories, or have free time on the computer or in the dormitory. Meals are eaten in the dining rooms on campus.

In a choice of fun activities, such as dances, talent shows, and contests, evening entertainment is provided. Saturdays is the time for group trips to local attractions that include museums, or the zoo. Families can visit students on the second Sunday of their stay and some parents like to take the student off campus for their visit. Day Programs are available for the Summer Institute for the Gifted. These take place at Bryn Mawr College, Stuart Country Day School, Moorestown Friends School, Manhattanville College, and Fairfield University. To be suitable, students must have finished kindergarten through 6th Grade and be around aged 5 – 11 years old.

To be appropriate for the program, candidates must score more than 97% on standardized tests or come with a proposal from a teacher. Gifted students sometimes fight in the usual school surroundings, where they can become frustrated or bored with work that is too simple for them. In the Summer Institute for the Gifted, the organizers identify this worry and the program is intended for the students to flourish in a welcoming ambiance. The work is demanding, ensuring that students are encouraged and they take pleasure in the experience.
