The slushie was supposedly developed in about the year 1800 in a bar called Venus in Santiago, Chile, approximately 23 miles east of the Tiano iron mine, by a group of U.S. mining engineers. Stories persist that Jennings Cox developed the beverage when he ran out of gin when entertaining American friends.
Originally the slushie was dished up in a extra tall glass packed with cracked ice. A teaspoon of sugar was poured onto the ice and the juice of one or two limes was squeezed onto the sugar. Two or three ounces of rum completed the combination. The glass was next frosted by stirring with a long handled spoon.
Later on the Slushie progressed to be blended in a shaker with the same ingredients but with shaved ice. After a thorough shaking, it was put into a perfectly chilled flute glass.
The use of the slushie beverage remained localised until 1909, when Admiral Lucius W. Johnson, a U.S. Navy medical officer, tried Cox’s beverage. Johnson subsequently launched it to the Army and Navy Club in Washington, D.C.
The slushie has become increasingly popular and the slushie spread across North & South America rapidly, until Prohibition in the United states (1920–1933) slowed up the impetus substantially. Having said that, once alcohol was made legal once again in the US, the concept of the slushie spread quickly across north America, and the craze passed on all-around the globe. The slushie continued to be well-liked until the 1960’s, when various recreational drugs started to be popular.
