The slushy was supposedly developed in about 1800 in a bar called Venus in Santiago, Chile, roughly 23 miles on the eastern side of the Tiano iron mine, by a team of U.S. mining technical engineers. Stories persist that Jennings Cox invented the drink when he ran out of gin while entertaining American guests.
At first the slushy was dished up in a large glass loaded with cracked ice. A tsp of sugar was poured on to the ice and the liquid of a couple of limes was squeezed over the sugar. 2 or three oz . of rum finished the mix. The glass was then frosted by mixing with a long handled spoon.
Later on the Slushy progressed to be mixed in a shaker with exactly the same ingredients but with shaved ice instead. After a thorough shaking, it was poured into a chilled flute goblet.
