As with any professional career there is a lot of training that goes into becoming a service adviser. You will definitely have to complete a NATEF certification program to work in this field. Most community colleges hold classes which help you to integrate yourself into the field. Some employers will request that you obtain your ASE certification, but it is generally not a requirement.

In order to get a position as an automotive service adviser you will need a couple years experience in both dealership relations and automotive technology. Along with all of this there will be specific duties that advisers will have to take on.

Having the ability to endure long and extended hours are a definite plus when it comes to this career. You are likely to put in a lot of hours each day and putting this as a priority is vital.

Customer service will be priority one for anyone who works in this field. You will not only be asked to meet with the clients, but also need to schedule and keep daily appointments and provide them with the information they need no matter what they are asking.

Since there will be so much scheduling and paperwork that is involved having good organization skills will be important. There is no tolerance in any dealership for shabby administrative skills as the book work will be very unforgiving.

With any job there are going to be instances where a delay cannot be avoided. It could be that a part has not come in or the dealership may be shorthanded on service technicians. Whatever the cause for any type of hold up you are responsible for following up with it. Your responsibility will involve keeping the customer updated with any information that you can provide as well as letting the tech know the status of an incoming part.

There is a lot of skills and dedication that goes into being an adviser training. There will be extended hours to contend with and dissatisfied customers to be dealt with. Yet, there is no other job in the automotive field with service adviser training that will bring you the personal rewards that this future career brings.
