What Is A Scissor Lift?

Scissor lifts (or man lifts) are ingenious platform type lifts which are commonly used in situations where there is limited access. They are typically used in situations where boom lifts would be impossible to use.

There are two specific situations concerning narrow, or restricted access where a scissor lift is the ideal solution. If you need to raise a platform for men to work from in some kind of shaft situation where it would be impossible to get a boom lift in, then of course the scissor lifts is the ideal solution. But also, there are many scenarios where a scissor lift needs to be taken inside a building that only has a small doorway for the lift to enter through.

Even the very largest scissor lifts will shrink to the sort of size that will pass through any standard doorway. A lot of thought has gone into the design of scissor lifts, so you will also find other features such as non-marking tires. These ensure that if the lift has to drive across an easily damaged surface no damage will be caused by the lift.

Some electrically powered scissor lifts are fitted with low sound emission electric motors. This enables the lift to be used in areas which may have people are working in a sound sensitive environment for example – a school or an office. Another great innovation is the addition of wheels with a zero turning radius. This enables the operator to make small adjustments, even when they are in the air. It also improves the general manoeuvrability of the lift in very tight spaces.

There are many attachments that you can buy to fit to your scissor lift. For example, you can attach platform work lights to the upper platform. Some platforms have folding guard rails which will fold completely flat so that when the lift is retracted it has an even lower height to enable it to pass through lower doorways. Sometimes you need to use any scissor lift on unlevel ground. This is where self-levelling outriggers come in handy. These are the legs which pushed down on the ground to stabilise the base of the lift. With a self-levelling outriggers, the base will effectively find its own level.

Sometimes scissor lifts can malfunction after heavy use. This is where on board diagnostics come in handy. These allow the operator to diagnose and hopefully solve the problem while the platform is raised. This obviously saves time because the operator does not have to lower the lift in order to solve the problem.

Scissor lifts are a valuable tool for many businesses and one of the best solutions when having to carry out work at height. Raise your game with a scissor lift.
