What Mp3 download service has the best bitrate?
I’ve had a plan to give away most of my CD’s in the last couple of months. To me, it was a no-brainer ; MP3s are more portable and a lot more easier to handle than CD’s.Together with an all-you-can-eat MP3 download service and one of the cheapest portable MP3 players around, I’m using one of the lowest cost music systems around.
But in order to be small enough to fit on even the cheapest portable MP3 player, these files have to be compressed from the source file.The result is lower quality sound.
Unfortunately, when I got a new hifi for my birthday this year, I realised the sound of MP3 (unless recorded in a high-definition format) isn’t, therefore, always up to scratch. In the end, probably it would have been better to stick to CDs with their higher quality bit rate.
Thankfully, I think there’s a solution.I found a site which compares different music downloading services and shows you which ones have which download capability. If I had made a compromise and used iTunes, I could have got a great sound with 320kps bitrate. That’ll give a great, full sound and still the convenience of MP3 downloads.
Here’s a few different services, and the bitrate they use:
- Napster – 192kps unlimited downloads from £10 / month
- Anthology – 320kps
- Walmart mp3 – 256kps
- Zune marketplace – 192kps
- Rhapsody – up to 160 kps
- Apple iTunes – 128 – 320kps (depends on the artist) file price from £0.79 per track
So if you want to stick to an all-you-can-eat download service, Napster is still probably the best value with the best bitrate for this type of service. But if you’re willing to pay per music file downloaded, then iTunes is well worth the investment for those high bit-rate songs.And if you’re using good headphones, you’ll really be able to tell the difference even if you’ve only got the cheapest portable MP3 player on the market.
