“Buy Kiwi Made” was a NZ Government campaign aimed at promoting awareness of nz products and recommending New Zealanders to use their nz shop. The directive was encouraging domestic producers to label their goods as New Zealand made. It uses the strap line “Buy Kiwi and We’ve Got it Made”. All nz products adopted the practice, and every genuine nz shop supported the designersas well. It is complementary to the Buy NZ Made Campaign Ltd which was founded in 1988 and which licenses use of the kiwi in a triangle insignia. NZ producers, retailers and the Government have been involved in promoting the ‘Buy NZ Made’ concept from 1908, then in Autums 2008 Buy Kiwi Made celebrated 100 years of buying Kiwi made nz products sold at a nz shop.
Since the latest elections, talks were had between the Green Party and NZ’s Labour Party that resulted in the creation of the government. A Buy Kiwi Made drive also evolved out of those talks and Rod Donald was appointed as a Government spokesperson for the drive.
After a few months of the election, and after Rod Donald’s death, the Labour party declined the combined Australian-New Zealand directive to dictate location of production labeling for food nz products, which was perceived as some as a mild rejection of the Buy Kiwi Made directive
programme’s principles; notably by your every day nz shop owner and their customers.
The Buy Kiwi Made campaign promoting the Buy Kiwi Made and Buy NZ Made initiatives included the developmet of a fresh Buy NZ Made nz shop & nz products site. The www.buykiwimade.govt.nz/ Buy NZ Made site was launched on 2 March 2007. It has since been disconnected. The Buy NZ Made media campaign was concluded by 30 June 2009. NZ Shop ownsers and producers of nz products in the private sector still use the Buy NZ Made Campaign, and will always promote use of the kiwi in a triangle insignia, as well as encourage purchasing of NZ products included in the multitude of nz shop domains.
